geht watschelnd und wackelnd,
schwimmt vorzüglich,
taucht mit größter Leichtigkeit,
und schnarrt,
wegen mannigfalter Zwischentöne,
merkwürdig,
unter Umständen
wohllautend sogar.
Futterneidisch ist er,
streit- und rauflustig,
hält sich abgesondert
von seinen Verwandten.
In Gefangenschaft
nur von äußersten Lieb-
habern gehalten,
weil er kostspielig
und nutzlos ist.
Während die Schönheit seiner Farben
und die Lebendigkeit seines Wesens
jeden Tierfreund überzeugen.
Lebte auf den Auckland Inseln. 1902 ausgestorben, vornehmlich durch Einführung von Schweinen, Katzen, Hunden und Einschleppung von Ratten.
Aus: Neun Vögel. Diese Vögel wurden alle in Brehms Tierleben von 1863 beschrieben und sind seitdem von der Erde und ihren Himmeln verschwunden.
Si muove camminando a papera e ondeggiando,
nuota magnificamente,
si immerge con estrema facilità,

would keep it captive,
as it is costly to maintain

win over every animal-lover.
Lived on the Auckland Islands. Extinct in 1902, mainly through the introduction of pigs, cats, dogs and rats.
