ist schon früh am Morgen rege
und geht erst spät zur Ruh,
treibt sich viel im Schilfe
und hat einen schwer-
fälligen, wankend
ermüdenden Flug,
gehört nicht zu den verträglichen Vögeln,
beweist dabei
einen mit ihrer geringen Größe
in keinem Verhältnis stehenden Mut,
fällt kleinere Vögel mörderisch an,
und ist doch als Gatte sehr zärtlich.
Sie liebt es den Teich ganz
für sich zu haben,
kämpft gegen Nachbarn
und baut mit dem Gatten gemeinschaftlich,
nur zuweilen sorgfältig,
gewöhnlich aber liederlich
ein kunstloses Nest für die Brut.

rises early in the morning
and retires late at night,
lives principally among the reeds
and has a belaboured, shaky,
tiresome flight,
is not one of the most peaceable birds,
shows a courage disproportionate
to its diminutive size,
attacks smaller birds with murderous intent,
and yet is very affectionate as a spouse.
It loves to have the pond
entirely to itself,
fights all neighbours
and builds, together with its partner,
only occasionally with care,
more often in a slipshod manner,
an artless nest for the brood.
